TopHatTM is a high bit rate, state of the art, 3G VLSI-baseband chip - capable of providing near-LAN applications and capabilities for 3G handheld devices. TopHat implements the 3GPP-FDD standard for User Equipment, enabling 3G Operators to accommodate broadband Internet access on compatible mobiles and smart phones. By supporting high data-rates of fully turbo-coded uplink/downlink data at 2Mbps (5.762Mbps uncoded) and with an extremely low power consumption (estimated less than 75mW at 1.3Volt operation and 384Kbps full duplex), TopHat lives up to Cellular3G's mission of developing and delivering the most power-efficient baseband 3G chip.

TopHat includes support for a variety of RF modules (both analogue and digital controls are possible), an Advanced Decoder design with a power-efficient turbo decoder supporting dual receive-antennae, and extensive software support. TopHat seamlessly interfaces to external modules such as GPS and Bluetooth, and a flexible interface is provided, allowing direct memory access and handshake capability with third party DSP chips, along with their program and data memories. TopHat also hosts an a-Law and µ-Law compression/decompression Codec, and in addition to on-chip local cache memories, the flexible memory interface scheme supported by TopHat allows for the use of a mix of Flash, SDRAM, SRAM and bootstrap ROM.
